Pilotcenter.net News: Celebrating 50 Years of Iberia's Iconic "Puente Aéreo" Service
In a nod to its rich aviation history, Spanish carrier Iberia recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of its renowned “Puente Aéreo” service, the air shuttle connecting Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) and Madrid-Barajas (MAD). Launched in 1974 to cater to the significant business travel demand between Spain’s two major cities, the “Puente Aéreo” service stands out for its unique offering - allowing passengers to show up at the airport without a prior reservation and board the next flight up to 20 minutes before takeoff. Passengers of the "Puente Aéreo" are treated to exclusive check-in facilities, dedicated boarding areas, and lounges at both airports.
While the "Puente Aéreo" service was not the world's first of its kind - that title belongs to the Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro air shuttle initiated in 1959 - it was the pioneering service of its kind in Europe. At certain junctures, the air bridge between Barcelona and Madrid even held the distinction of being the busiest scheduled air route globally. Such was its impact that the term "Puente Aéreo" has become ingrained in Spanish culture, prompting a legal dispute in 1996 when a Spanish court ruled that Iberia did not have exclusive rights to the term in a challenge brought by its competitor and potential merger candidate, Air Europa.
Iberia retained a monopoly on the Barcelona-Madrid route until 1993, operating predominantly with Boeing 727 aircraft. However, the liberalization of European skies opened the door for other carriers like Air Europa and Spanair to enter the market. Surprisingly, the main competition for the "Puente Aéreo" did not arise from rival airlines but from the advent of high-speed rail service between Barcelona and Madrid in 2008. The high-speed train, which has since increased its frequency thanks to new rail operators, now accounts for over 80% of the traffic between the two cities.
Despite the formidable competition from rail services, Iberia's air shuttle remains a cornerstone of the Spanish flag carrier's operations, with approximately 86 weekly flights in each direction operated by A320-family aircraft. The continued popularity of the "Puente Aéreo" service underscores its enduring legacy and the unique convenience it offers to travelers navigating between Barcelona and Madrid.
