Ethiopian Airlines has joined forces with Archer Aviation, a leader in electrical vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, to embark on an exciting journey towards introducing air taxi travel in the near future. The collaboration was sealed with a $30 million agreement as part of Archer’s ‘Launch Edition’ program, which aims to establish a solid commercialization framework for the early deployment of aircraft in key markets. The plan entails deploying an initial fleet of Midnight aircraft in the Ethiopian region, showcasing the aircraft's capabilities, building operational experience, and generating early revenue.

Archer, together with a dedicated team of pilots, technicians, and engineers, will provide support for the initiative. The focus is not only on developing an air taxi network but also on exploring other potential applications, such as eco-tourism. The partnership will also involve Archer providing advanced software infrastructure and booking applications to Ethiopian Airlines for operational efficiency.

During the signing of the agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew expressed enthusiasm, emphasizing the commitment to introducing innovative air mobility solutions in Africa. The collaboration aims to revolutionize regional travel and create sustainable transportation opportunities.

Archer's Founder and CEO, Adam Goldstein, highlighted the significance of this partnership. Following a similar agreement with Abu Dhabi Aviation, Archer is set to deploy its Midnight aircraft in Ethiopia, tapping into the continent's promising market for advanced air mobility solutions. The Midnight eVTOL is designed as a piloted, four-passenger aircraft capable of efficient and rapid flights with minimal charge time between journeys.

This milestone comes after Archer recently obtained its Part 141 certificate from the FAA, further solidifying its position as a recognized and regulated institution for pilot training. With previous certifications under its belt, including Part 135 Air Carrier & Operator Certificate and Part 145 certification, Archer's advancements in eVTOL technology and strategic partnerships are propelling the aviation industry into a new era of sustainable and efficient travel.
