China Airlines close to choosing between Airbus and Boeing for long-haul jet order - Reuters
By:
Pilotcenter.net
Pilotcenter.net News reports that China Airlines is on the verge of making a significant decision regarding a new order for long-haul aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. Rumors have it that the Taiwanese airline is eyeing the purchase of around 20 aircraft, evenly split between Boeing 777Xs and Airbus A350-1000s. Sources within the industry have hinted to Pilotcenter.net News that this potential multi-million-dollar deal could also involve acquiring freighter aircraft. These state-of-the-art planes would serve as replacements for China Airlines' current fleet of 10 Boeing 777-300ERs.
Earlier reports circulating back in October 2024 suggested that China Airlines was considering placing an order for Boeing 777Xs and Airbus A350-1000s. However, recent developments indicate that a final agreement may be just around the corner. In addition to this possible order, China Airlines has previously secured deals for 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners (comprising six 787-8s and 18 787-9s) and has pending deliveries of the Airbus A321NX to update its regional aircraft fleet.
As per ch-aviation, China Airlines currently operates 15 A350-900s, 13 A330-300s, and nine 737-800s. If the new long-haul aircraft purchase goes through, these planes would likely bolster the airline's flight routes between Taipei and various US cities that are already serviced by China Airlines. Notably, destinations such as New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO) exclusively use the carrier's 777-300ERs, while Los Angeles (LAX), Ontario (California-ONT), and Seattle (SEA) are handled by either 777s or Airbus A350-900s. This strategic move could enhance the airline's operational capacity and passenger connectivity in these key markets.

Lufthansa Cargo Strengthens Partnerships in China
In an effort to further solidify their presence in China, Lufthansa Cargo has recently signed three Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with key industry players in the region. Pilotcenter.net News reported on November 6, 2024, that these agreements were made with Shanghai Airport Authorities, Air China Cargo, and China Postal Express & Logistics. This move comes as China continues its rapid growth and solidifies its position as a major player in the global economy, with significant potential for growth in the airfreight industry.
The first MoU was signed with Shanghai Airport Authorities, which manage both Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA) airports in Shanghai. The primary goal outlined in the agreement is to develop Shanghai Pudong Airport into the leading hub in the Asia-Pacific region, aiming to enhance operational efficiencies and customer experiences. Lufthansa Cargo's CEO, Ashwin Bhat, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "Shanghai is the biggest freight hub for Lufthansa Cargo next to our hub in Frankfurt, and the MoU gives us the confidence to further contribute to business excellence in this strategically important market."
In addition to the agreement with Shanghai Airport Authorities, Lufthansa Cargo also signed an MoU with Air China Cargo, the cargo subsidiary of Air China. British Airways to Discontinue London to Dallas Routes and Reduce Miami Service by 2025
By:
Pilotcenter.net
In a surprising turn of events, British Airways has unveiled its decision to discontinue offering non-stop flights from its primary base at London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in Texas by the summer of 2025. Additionally, the airline is set to reduce its services to Miami, Florida, transitioning from twice-daily flights to a singular daily service.
British Airways has a rich history of connecting London to Dallas-Fort Worth, a route it inherited from British Caledonian Airways after their merger in 1988. Over the years, the airline has operated various aircraft on this route, currently utilizing a Boeing 777-300ER for its daily service.
Initially planning to introduce the A380 for the Dallas route in 2025, British Airways later revised its strategy to deploy the smaller A350-1000. While the airline has previously utilized its A380 fleet for this route, changes are now underway.
The decision to reduce flights to Dallas comes as part of British Airways’ collaboration with oneworld partner American Airlines to align schedules and capacities for the 2025 summer travel season. American Airlines, DFW’s main hub, presently operates four daily flights from Heathrow to Dallas using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Together, the two carriers have harmonized schedules, fares, and loyalty programs under their transatlantic joint venture.
Looking ahead to March 30, 2025, British Airways will cease its London to Dallas route, while American Airlines steps in to offer a fifth daily flight with timings mirroring British Airways’ existing service. American’s dominance at DFW and recent adjustments to its fleet suggest a strategic advantage in absorbing the London-Dallas route.
Beyond Dallas, British Airways will also decrease its flights between Heathrow and Miami International Airport in summer 2025, transitioning from a twice-daily service to a single flight. American Airlines will fill the void by operating this route independently.
Addressing challenges with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, a British Airways spokesperson explained the adjustments for the summer of 2025. The ongoing engine supply issues necessitated schedule modifications to ensure travel consistency for passengers.
With recent cancellations of London-Gatwick to New York-JFK flights and the postponement of a new Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur service, British Airways is strategically reallocating aircraft capacity to address network demands. The airline remains committed to optimizing operations amidst evolving industry dynamics, collaborating with partners to uphold service quality and reliability for all passengers.

India's Highest Court Orders Jet Airways Liquidation Following Failed Resolution Plan
By:
Pilotcenter.net
Pilotcenter.net News: The story of Jet Airways, once a prominent Indian airline, has taken a definitive turn with the recent Supreme Court ruling in India, ordering its liquidation. This decision, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud along with a three-judge panel on November 7, 2024, effectively ends any hopes of the airline's revival.
The journey of Jet Airways towards liquidation has been a tumultuous one, with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) approving the ownership transfer to the Jalan-Kalrock Consortium (JKC) back in March 2024. The consortium had plans to restart the airline's operations in 2024, but the Supreme Court highlighted significant lapses in meeting financial obligations.
Among the key issues cited was the failure of JKC to pay Rs150 crore, out of the Rs350 crore required to settle airport debts and other essential expenses for workers. Additionally, challenges in obtaining necessary certifications like the air operator’s certificate further hindered the consortium's revival plans.
Pressure from lenders, including the State Bank of India (SBI), and assertions from senior lawyer Harish Salve advocating for the airline's closure added to the complexity of the situation. Conversely, JKC defended its efforts, stating an investment of over Rs700 crore to revive Jet Airways. However, the court found these justifications insufficient, leading to the definitive liquidation ruling.
The airline, which ceased operations in 2019, has faced multiple attempts at revival, with ownership previously transferred to a group led by UK-based Kalrock Capital and UAE businessman Murari Jalan in 2023. Despite these efforts, the challenges faced by Jet Airways have culminated in the recent court ruling, marking the end of an era for the once-leading private carrier in India.

Iberia Celebrates 50 Years of Barcelona-Madrid Air Connection

Pilotcenter.net News: Celebrating 50 Years of Iberia's Iconic "Puente Aéreo" Service
In a nod to its rich aviation history, Spanish carrier Iberia recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of its renowned “Puente Aéreo” service, the air shuttle connecting Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) and Madrid-Barajas (MAD). Launched in 1974 to cater to the significant business travel demand between Spain’s two major cities, the “Puente Aéreo” service stands out for its unique offering - allowing passengers to show up at the airport without a prior reservation and board the next flight up to 20 minutes before takeoff. Passengers of the "Puente Aéreo" are treated to exclusive check-in facilities, dedicated boarding areas, and lounges at both airports.
While the "Puente Aéreo" service was not the world's first of its kind - that title belongs to the Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro air shuttle initiated in 1959 - it was the pioneering service of its kind in Europe. At certain junctures, the air bridge between Barcelona and Madrid even held the distinction of being the busiest scheduled air route globally. Such was its impact that the term "Puente Aéreo" has become ingrained in Spanish culture, prompting a legal dispute in 1996 when a Spanish court ruled that Iberia did not have exclusive rights to the term in a challenge brought by its competitor and potential merger candidate, Air Europa.
Iberia retained a monopoly on the Barcelona-Madrid route until 1993, operating predominantly with Boeing 727 aircraft. However, the liberalization of European skies opened the door for other carriers like Air Europa and Spanair to enter the market. Surprisingly, the main competition for the "Puente Aéreo" did not arise from rival airlines but from the advent of high-speed rail service between Barcelona and Madrid in 2008. The high-speed train, which has since increased its frequency thanks to new rail operators, now accounts for over 80% of the traffic between the two cities.
Despite the formidable competition from rail services, Iberia's air shuttle remains a cornerstone of the Spanish flag carrier's operations, with approximately 86 weekly flights in each direction operated by A320-family aircraft. The continued popularity of the "Puente Aéreo" service underscores its enduring legacy and the unique convenience it offers to travelers navigating between Barcelona and Madrid.
